Imagine…

Love One Another

Imagine being part of a community of people where everyone was loved, regardless of age, background, race, intellect, status, ability, achievements…

Imagine being part of a community of people where generosity and kindness are second nature, being displayed in small yet significant ways on a daily basis…a hug, a smile, a meal made, a car fixed…

Imagine being part of a community of people where the truth is upheld but grace is offered for mistakes and mess ups…

Imagine being part of a community of people where you are in need and someone sold what they had to help you out…

Imagine being part of a community of people where hospitality and forgiveness flows freely, a warm welcome awaits and fresh starts are readily available…

Imagine being part of a community of people where the broken are restored, the sick healed, the lost found, the lonely belong, the least embraced…

Imagine being part of a community of people where those with no faith, with sure faith, with mustard seed faith, with doubting faith are adopted into a family…

Imagine being part of a community of people where the gifts and abilities God has given are used to build Kingdom as empowered by the Spirit…

Imagine being part of a community of people who are devoted to God, to His word, to prayer, where the reality of what you read is the reality of life…

Imagine being part of a community of people with Jesus at the centre of all you do and are, where loving Jesus is the starting place of loving others…

Imagine it?! Just Imagine what it would like, the practical reality of compassion and patience, love, truth and grace, empowered by the Spirit of God…imagine the difference it would make to your life…and to those around you…

Imagine it and then realise that this is what church is and is meant to be; what the Holy Spirit birthed and set into motion at Pentecost.

Who wants to be part of a church like that?
Then we have to be willing to be that kind of people.

What would it take for that picture to become more and more a reality?
Because the kind of church we imagine, we want to see, is the kind of church we make it, if we want a more kind, compassionate, loving church we need to be willing to be more kind, compassionate, loving, if we want a church that embraces the least and sees the broken restored, we need to be willing to put our arms around someone and work with messy lives.

There is only one way that happens (on this Valentines Weekend when love is thought about and displayed) and that is to love one another. Jesus said: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John13:34-35 NIV) This is a non-negotiable of the church, of Christian Faith! This is what it looks like, we are not only to imagine, we are to be it, to live it, to work it out and walk it out.

How do we do that? Amongst other things: Kindness – how can you express kindness to someone this week? Generosity – not just with ‘things’ but with your life – Who can you bless this week? Forgiveness – 1 Corinthians 13 describes love as ‘not holding a record of wrongs’ – is there someone you need to forgive and not hold onto an offense or upset?

1 John 3: 1, 16-18 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (1 John3:1, 16-18 NIV)
